Aspiring artists from various artistic backgrounds fill EC with their talents. Some students aren’t quite professional artists yet, but they are EC’s finest.
The student-produced artwork us exhibited in the annual showcase which began Monday, May 18 and will run through Friday, June 5.
“This is the last show of the year here in the art gallery and we have about 162 pieces in,” Susanna Meiers, art gallery curator said.
The Student Show includes a variety of unique works from various art classes. Pieces exhibited include traditional two-dimensional painting media as well as drawing media on paper, printmaking techniques, photographic processes, and last but not least a cross section of three-dimensional techniques such as jewelry construction and sculptures.
“My piece was made in the 3D design class in the summer and I spent literally every day for three and a half weeks working on it,” Heather Anacker, 23, studio art major said. “I do a lot of sculpture work; My piece is a life-sized mermaid made out of so many things including paper mache, chicken wire, paint, fabric, wig, marbles and a fishing net.”
“It’s my second time being in the exhibit and it’s a better representation of what I like to do,” Anacker said. “I’ll have more of my artwork along with others displayed in the basement showing.”
All of the work in the exhibition was selected by instructors in the department as examples of some of the best work produced by students on campus.
“It’s very impressive; I didn’t expect it to be this great,” Justin Chen, 20, graphic design and animation major said. “The students are very skilled. I just really like how the gallery itself is imposed and how the pictures are put together.”
Careful preparation and a lot of hard work can be seen as soon as one walks through the gallery surrounded by artworks from emerging artists.
“I’m an art student myself and the photography really stands out this year. Seeing all this work is really inspiring, it’s all very creative,” Melissa Anacker, 26, art major said.
There will be a reception and open house set by the art department tomorrow from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The gallery will be closed for the Memorial Day holiday, May 25.
“Most of these you wouldn’t even think they’re student produced,” Susana Rodriguez, 23, digital art major said. “This annual’s showcase in the gallery is the last show of the year and what better way of ending the gallery’s last show than with having ordinary students like us representing just how skillful and talented EC really is.”
