Models walk tall while fashion students stand proud while they try on their outfits and put the last touches together, all anticipating what they believe to be the show of the year.
On Friday, May 30, fashion students will have the 26th annual spring fashion show called “Evolution” starting at 7:30 p.m. and sponsored by EC’s fashion club Tailor Made.
“The show mainly showcases student work both in the community and EC students,” Vera Bruce, fashion department adviser, said.
Students from the draping, patternmaking, advanced sewing, fitting and alterations, and tailoring classes created clothing for the fashion show. It takes at least a semester to organize and get work done and ready for the show.
“This year we are a small class, but anyone who wants to design and make their clothes is welcomed to do so for the fashion show,” Gabriela Delgadillo, fashion merchandising major and promoter for the fashion show, said.
There are about 30 models in the show. All of them are students, and many of them have participated in the fashion show in previous years. Banners and fliers are distributed through campus to promote model calls.
“We have a model call, send out fliers, call models from other years and also welcome any other students interested to come in and fill out an application,” Joyce Joaquin, fashion department assistant advisor said.
Joaquin is also the designer for the website for the fashion department through EC’s website.
“We have judges who focus on seeing how the models walk and their personality,” Joaquin said.
Fashion students had a preshow this Tuesday on the library lawn, which displayed a preview of their fashion show. They also do this every year as they prepare for the show.
“We have fundraisers like during the international food fair and the preshow we had on Tuesday in which we had last year’s clothes on dress forms and we sold snacks,” Delgadillo said.
The fashion show not only focuses on displaying designs by EC students, but designs by nearby high school students.
“We try to have as many designers as possible. Teachers at nearby high schools ask their students if they are interested in making clothes for the fashion show,” Delgadillo said. “Without the participation of these high school students, our show would not be the same.”
Many students start preparing and creating their clothes at the beginning of the fall semester since the show is duringspring semester.
“The show is produced by the fashion show production and promotion class. Clothing is created mostly by class members in our various design and construction classes,” Bruce said.
With all the dedication it takes to produce the fashion show, the students displayed their passion and seriousness about their pursuit in careers in fashion design.
“I am very excited about the show. I have been doing this for a couple of years and it is always a great experience,” Joaquin said.
In previous years, the turnout for the show has been good with many people attending. Joaquin expects it to be just as good, if not, better than past shows.
“We are putting all our effort to make this fashion show the best this year.” Delgadillo said.
Presale tickets are $10 and $15 at the door. For more information, interested persons may call Jillian Dongo (310) 660-5345.
All proceeds will benefit scholarships and funding for next year’s show.
