Swim and dive on the right track
On your marks, the bell rang, and the EC swim and dive team began their competition against both East L.A. College and Rio Hondo College hosted in the EC pool, last March 14.
“I thought we did a good job,” coach Corey Stanbury said. “We had a lot of very good swims, although the men didn’t have much competition, the women had a tide rise against East L.A., but we came out on top.” “Some swimmers especially had some great runs, and every worked hard to come out with a victory, so thats good,” Stanbury said.
According to the result sheets, the EC women’s team won the 50 freestyle, 50 backstroke, 1 thousand freestyle, and 4×400 freestyle relay.
The men’s team competed amongst themselves, because other teams didn’t have enough men swimmers.
Some of the events that men stood out in were the 4×400 freestyle, two hundred freestyle, one hundred butterfly, and others.
“I think I came a long way,” Roxanne Vili, 20, sophomore said. “Sometimes, i’m not in first place, but I try to be, so it’s just a matter of practicing and until you get better.” “I’m happy with my scores, and I can always do better,” Vili said. “It was my first butterfly one hundred, and I was little nervous, but I fought through it I felt good finishing.” “I think its just once you get in, you let everything go, and you just swim until you get tired and finish it.”
Vili did a great job in the women’s 4×200 medley relay, and placed fourth in the one hundred butterfly, according to the results.
In the diving category, East L.A. College and Rio Hondo College both didn’t have any divers, so Christy Villasor, 20, sophomore, was the only women’s diver, so she competed by herself in the 1m, and had a great performance.
“Since I was the only one diving, it was very quick, so it was hard to concentrate mentally for each dive,” Villasor said. “Since I had practiced these dives throughout the week and in season, I’m was mentally ready already, although I never gone through a dive meet that quick,” Villasor said.
The next event for the swim and dive team is Mar. 21, against L.A. Trade Tech College and Chaffey College, at Chaffey.
