Women’s basketball team stops skid

With about six minutes left in regulation, Jessica Bruner, center, was fouled and was up at the free throw line to attempt two free throws, Friday, Dec. 2.

She calmly made both free throws and put the Warriors up by one and they never looked back

EC (2-4, 0-2) won a nail-biter against Southwestern College 68-61 as they snapped a four game losing streak.

The Warriors will head back home after a 1-3 road trip and face College of the Desert Wednesday.

“We were able to be more consistent with our performance,” Steve Shaw, coach, said. “We did a better job of executing on the game floor.”

Briana Hunt, guard, continued to be the go-to scorer scoring 19 points with Noelini Tuiasoa, forward, chipping in with 16 points. Amanda Young, guard, did a little bit of everything, with an old knee injury flaring up, as she had a team-high eight rebounds as well as dishing out six assists and also had three steals.

“Hopefully we can get some momentum with this win and take some confidence with us to our game on Wednesday,” Kristen Dresser, guard, said. “We have to remember things coach tells us in practice so that when we get on the floor we can execute them instinctively instead of thinking too much about making plays on our own.”

As the Warriors won for the first time since pummeling Allan Hancock College on the season opener at EC, the team looks to try to build on the team chemistry from this game and will look to improve more as the season rolls along, Kirsten Hurd, forward, said.

“We’ve just got to keep our heads up and take this win with a grain of salt,” she said. “We have to remember that every team presents a new challenge for us and we can’t take this win to our heads too much.”
