Women’s basketball team continues winning ways

As the Warriors’ starting lineup: Noelini Tuiasoa, forward; Kirsten Hurd, forward; Briana Hunt, guard; Amanda Young, guard; Jessica Bruner, center, all sat on the bench in the last minutes of the second half, they could not help themselves but giggle and laugh as the bench-players finished out the game.

From the get-go College of the Desert was completely overmatched by EC (3-4, 0-2), as the Warriors won 64-32.

EC will be home again as they face off with Pasadena City College tomorrow at 6 p.m.

“We’re playing back in the conference again,” Steve Shaw, coach said. “Our conference (South Coast) is just really solid from top to bottom. This (Pasadena City College) is another highly ranked team. So it’s going to be a stiffer challenge than this game. We’re going to have to just play more consistently good basketball for the full 40 minutes.”

Tuiasoa led the team with 16 points as she was one of four players who scored in double figures. Hurd chipped in with 15 points and Hunt and Young had 10 points a piece.

“I felt like we were all moving the ball well constantly,” Hunt said. “We also made good passes and we were being smart with the ball looking for the open person.”

EC was up 32-17 after the first half; that lead ballooned to 47-17 as the Warriors put up 15 unanswered points.

Although EC played some stifling defense most of the game, there were a couple defensive lapses that resulted in some easy baskets by the opponents.

“We gotta just play our defense and stop gambling,” Hurd said. “As long as we did that, they wouldn’t have had those easy baskets.”

As the Warriors are now on a two game winning streak, they look to continue to get better and stay consistent, Shaw said.

“Our focus is on us and getting better,” he said. “Right now, our biggest enemy is ourselves so our biggest competition is just doing better.”
