Review: “Oz the Great and Powerful” delivers

Boom! An explosion goes off and a cloud of smoke rises from the middle of the courtyard in Emerald City.

Oscar Diggs’s (James Franco), AKA Oz, face appears in the cloud as he appears in front of the crowd watching as Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Theodora (Mila Kunis)are about to attack Glinda (Michelle Williams.)

“I am the Wizard of Oz,” Diggs proclaims.

And with that,” Oz The Great and Powerful” shows us how Oscar Diggs becomes the man behind the curtain.

The movie brings us on a journey with Oscar Diggs, a magician in a traveling circus, who is waiting for his one big gig to become the likes of Thomas Edison and Harry Houdini.

Diggs arrives in Oz after fleeing from a man on his hot air balloon in Kansas and is taken on a wild ride through a tornado and ends up landing in Oz.

James Franco does an excellent job of playing Oscar and really gives the sense that you, the audience, is following Oscar before on his journey before and after he became the Wizard of Oz.

The film starts just as the classic did, in black and white, and then transitions into color once Diggs arrives in Oz.

Without being too much like the 1939 classic Wizard of Oz, the movie is brilliant in introducing new characters and making you fall in love just as you had done with the Cowardly Lion, Scarecrow and Tinman.

The flying monkey named, Finley (Zach Braff), and the porcelain girl named China Girl (Joey King) are two vital characters that aid Oscar as he tries to find himself throughout the movie.

The only knick in this film would be the question, who is the wicked witch?

Mila Kunis plays the role of Theodora, the good witch, when Oscar first arrives in Oz and Theodora is all but certain he is the wizard sent to save Emerald City from the wicked witch.

Rachel Weisz plays Evanora, who is her sister and will end up giving her sister an apple that will transform her from good to a green hideous witch most people would recognize from the 1939 classic.

In the end ,Disney hits a homerun with the CGI and 3D that rivals any movie to date. The visuals in the movie are incredible and make the film 10 times better than it already was.

Great and powerful are the two words to describe this movie perfectly and anyone would leave happily when they see it.
