Anthony Ramos- Salsa Club President

  1. 1.    What is your position in the club

I am the president and also the founder of the Salsa Club.

  1. 2.    Who is the adviser and vice president?

We have one vice president, Laura Valdez and also two advisers

  1. 3.    When and where does the club meet?

Normally we meet every Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. in Room 233 of the South P.E. Building, but there have been some room conflicts because of high priority dance classes, so that room is on stand-by for us right now.  However, some cabinet members are teaching free salsa dance workshops on Thursdays from 7-9 p.m..  If anyone is interested they just have to contact the salsa club through our Facebook group or our email ([email protected]).

  1. 4.    What are the requirements to join your club?

There aren’t any specific requirements.  No dance background is needed and anyone  who is an ECC student is welcomed to join!

  1. 5.    What kind of music do you salsa dance to?

You can dance salsa to whatever you feel like, but we mostly listen to Flamenco and Bachata, which is a style of music from the Dominican Republic.

  1. 6.    How long has the club been on campus?

I started this club over a year and a half ago, so its been on campus for quite awhile.

  1. 7.    Are their any events coming up?

This semester we are just trying to get new members more familiar with basic salsa moves.  In April we will perform and hopefully compete in the College Salsa Congress.  Last April we only performed, but I hope to have the club compete this year.

  1. 8.    How many members are in the club?

I would say there are 60 to 70 plus members.  We have a lot of members on our Facebook group and email list, but there are always new faces as well as familiar faces every meeting.

  1. 9.    What are the clubs goals for this year?

Right now we’re just trying to promote the club as much as possible.  We’re also teaching our newer members basic salsa fundamentals so that we are ready to hopefully compete in April at the College Salsa Congress.

10. Are there any perks in being in the Salsa Club?

Our club is sponsored by Very Fine Dance Shoes and all of our members get 50 percent of all dance shoes!  We also have an alliance with the Salsa clubs at Cal State Fullerton and Cal State Long Beach, which is always good for networking with other salsa dancers.

11. What responsibilities do you have as the president?

As president I mostly manage and promote the Salsa Club, I come up with choreography, and I’m just responsible for what goes on in the club and everyone’s behavior within the club as well.  If I am unable to attend meetings Laura Valdez, our vice president, would take over for me.

  1. 12.  What goes on during a club meeting?

A normal club meeting begins with warm-up steps, we also make sure to stretch before dancing.  After that, we go through basic steps and small combination steps.  After we dance I will lecture for a bit, and just let the club know about certain promotions or upcoming festivals.
