What is your position in the club?
I am president of the Gay-Straight Alliance club.
What is the purpose of the Gay-Straight Alliance club?
We are a safe environment for gay and lesbian students to come express themselves and for allies who support their gay or lesbian friends.
When and where do you meet?
We meet every Tuesday in Art and Behavioral Science Building, Art 338.
What do you think about Proposition 8? (the proposition that banned gay
marriage in California)
I think Proposition 8 should not have passed and I think the wording and language on Proposition 8 was confusing, because you had to vote no if you were pro-gay marriage. Proposition 8 passed because of lack of knowledge. I mean, it had nothing to do with teaching gay marriage in schools.
Last week was National Coming Out Day. What was your coming out like?
I came out to my friend in high school over Instant messenger. He was like “OK,
do you know what the math homework is?” Then I came out to everyone. Once you
say, “Hey I am gay,” it’s completely different than when you type it out to someone because saying it makes it true.
Why is the club called Gay-Straight Alliance?
We don’t ask a member’s sexual preference because it takes away from the point of
the club. There is a good balance in the club, but we do have a lack of heterosexual males, I think that is because they feel like they will be
stigmatized.
Why is having heterosexual people in the club important?
Gay people only make up 10 percent of the population, so it is a minority group. We don’t have enough voting power, so we need straight allies to help support us. People often forget the word straight is part of the club name.
What kind of events has the club done?
On Oct. 20 we had a spirit day where everyone wore purple in honor of bullied gay and lesbian youth. This past Sunday we participated in an AIDS Walk.
