Lisa Brown is president for Students without Borders International Club.
When and where does the club meet?
Meetings are held in the Art and Behavioral Sciences building in room 106. Meetings are every first and third Thursday from 1p.m. to 1:45 p.m.
How many members are in the club?
There are about 12 members in club, but it ranges between meetings.
Can anyone join?
Absolutely. We are looking for more people to join. If anyone is interested in promoting cultural awareness, they are welcome to come. Also, if anyone has any ideas, they are welcome to share those with the club.
As president, what are your duties?
I just lead the meetings and discussions. Together as a club we come to conclusions. I pretty much represent the club when I present ideas to the school.
Who started the club?
A student named Vanessa Villegas started the club about a year ago. She moved and left the club to a new president. Only a couple months ago did I become involved and until recently was appointed president.
What is the purpose of the club?
The purpose is to show other students that each person comes with a different background. Also we want to show them that we all can work together and learn to respect each other. It’s to promote the idea that racism is a horrible thing.
What kind of events does the club do?
We hold fundraisers, such as the Cinco de Mayo fundraiser. The donations we receive from this fundraiser will go towards the International Fair. We are also working on helping with a fundraiser for Haiti.
Why is the Cinco de Mayo fundraiser important?
Well, it’s our fist big event and we want to attract as many people as possible. Many people don’t know why Cinco de Mayo is celebrated and this event will help educate them about it. There will also be fun games and music. It’s going to on the Library Lawn from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
