The Second Amendment says that we have the right to bear arms, yet most places in the U.S. don’t allow citizens to carry a handgun.
People have a right to protect themselves, and although the amendment allows people to keep a rifle at home for protection, there is danger that occurs outside of the home as well.
By the summer of 2010, the Supreme Court justices will have decided if the local ordinance that restricts residents from owning a hand gun at home should be struck down as a violation of the Second Amendment.
Many agree that the ordinance will most likely be removed, and that this decision will open the door to many other cases against local cities and states.
In 2008, the Ohio Supreme Court passed a law that allows citizens to carry a concealed weapon with them, even in city parks.
Most people may be against carrying a concealed weapon in a place such as a park, but the ability to defend oneself at any point in time could give some citizens a feel of security. Citizens should not be able to obtain a gun without being trained in its use.
Everybody should have to take classes to learn how to properly shoot a weapon. These classes should also explain that the weapon they are training with should only be used in certain circumstances.
The legislation should also provide an exemption for those who have been tried and charged with robbery and other crimes. These individuals should not be allowed to own weapons in the first place.
The average citizen should be able to carry a concealed handgun in order to protect himself or herself.
Some will argue that self-defense classes like karate should be enough, but when someone is taller and stronger, self-defense classes may not be enough.
Others will also argue that allowing citizens to carry concealed handguns may lead to more homicides and gang violence.
Trauma and/or stress in someone’s past or present are what motivate people to take violent action. People who want to commit violence to themselves or others will find a way with our without guns. Other states should follow Ohio’s lead, because the citizens of the U.S. have the right under the Second Amendment to have a gun for protection, and the state and local cities should not be able to take those rights away.
