This about moral values, life lessons and teachings of rookies vs. seasoned vets.
This is about criticism that this generation of “lazy people” face against “hard workers/blue collar” workers of yesteryear’s past.
This is about comparing the current trend of people in this era against those 2 or 3 decades ago.
This was brought up when two people, an old man and a server at a restaurant started talking prior to the old man ordering his meal.
He said to the server, “knock em’ dead buddy,” when being informed that the server was writing for the school newspaper, “when I was your age, I worked at the farm with my dad, had to raise both of my siblings because my mom wasn’t able to and my dad worked by himself. These days, you have these damn kids that are spoon fed, spoiled by their parents and don’t have to do anything on their own.”
This is the server’s rebuttal; Technology is way more advanced now than it was in the old man’s era.
No, he’s not being made fun of for being old. It’s just unfair to say that “you kids” are lazy compared to the old generation.
Is it the youth’s fault that the old generation had to work in farms, milk cows, work at the mills, pick cherries when they were young?
Is it the youth’s fault that college is now for everyone and jobs are more abundant compared to when the majority of people who worked and went to college were Caucasian males?
The old customer didn’t agree with his rebuttal, ignorantly replying, “well we didn’t have those opportunities back in the day. That’s why I worked in the farm.”
He just contradicted himself.
The new generation now has the opportunity that they didn’t have.
Is it the new generation’s fault that freedom exists now? Is it their fault that Blacks, whites, Mexicans, Asians and Middle Easterns are allowed to work wherever they want and attend whichever college they want?
So, for all of the hard nosed veterans who have done it all; it’s not the new generation’s fault that the old timers had to work that hard, while this generation of so called, “lazy kids” have a choice in life.
It is the new generation’s fault, however, if they don’t make anything out of life.
It would be out of context to discuss how important college is because that would be too broad of a topic to touch base with.
It is their fault, however, if this generation doesn’t utilize the tools and the opportunities that are presented in front of them; that would be called “being lazy.”
It is their job to go out there and utilize their potential because sky’s the limit.
But to generalize this generation as lazy is just pure ignorance. The words “spoon fed,” “silver platter” and “spoiled” are really offensive to the ears of the youth.
The life of a typical college student is anything but those. Aside from multiple classes, students often have jobs to make ends meet.
That is anything but being lazy.
The server wasn’t being disrespectful to the elder man. He did not have any intention to disrespect those who are superior than him in age.
But the old man’s point of view regarding this generation was very biased so the server just wanted to give him his point of view.
So as he closed his opinion with the customer, who seemed to be in utter defeat, seemingly irritated, the only thing that he could say back to the young server, his only rebuttal was, “Check please.”
