Weird things have been known to occur in our everyday life.
On the road, at home, at work, at the store or just in a random place, we notice or experience something unusual happening.
Just recently, while walking across the EC campus, I was a witness to a few strange events happening.
No, I am not talking about the person asking for your signature on a petition about Indian rights or plastic bags.
What I am talking about are things that most people who avoid the middle of campus do not witness.
On my way to an interview, I noticed an older male just south of the library.
He was wearing all black, an outfit that could be compared to a Speedo.
And he was apparently sprinting across a patch of grass.
Another male stood less than 10 feet away with a stopwatch, apparently timing him.
This did not strike me as awkward, as the campus was surprisingly quiet at 12:30 p.m. on a Monday.
As I kept walking, a younger male approached me.
This did not startle me, because in my time at EC I have been approached by stranger persons.
The question that came out of his mouth, however, did startle me.
“Would you be interested in studying the Bible?”
Being the person I am, I shrugged this off with quickness.
I kept walking and just chuckled.
While walking, I crossed paths with a friend from high school, who happens to be a Spanish tutor here at EC.
I asked him the same question that I was previously asked, and I got the same reaction from him as I gave the other male: a chuckle.
To clear things up, I am of Roman-Catholic faith.
I was raised in an Italian family, with strong Roman-Catholic values.
I attended 12 years of private Catholic schools before EC.
In those 12 years, I have done a good amount of Bible studying.
It may seem like I was laughing at the question asked, and I was.
But how would this person know what faith I was without knowing my background?
He wouldn’t.
There is no way that this person would know what faith I am, just by the way I dress.
After thinking the situation over a few more times, something occurred to me.
I have been preached this time after time. In my 24+ years, I have been told this same thing over and over:
“Don’t judge a book by its cover.”
Just because a person looks a certain way does not mean that is how they are on the inside.
The way a person dresses does not show me at all how that person is going to act.
The only way you can know anything about anyone is to talk to him or her.
Now, I can think of a few ways that I could have answered that question better.
Maybe next time, I will be able to speak to him like a human being.
Maybe next time I’ll speak to him as a person, instead of just blowing him off like, I am sure, many others did and will.
