Campus Forum: Carl Turano, A custodian at Ec
Carl Turano is a custodian who has helped keep EC’s campus clean for the past five years.
Where did you work before this?
I worked for 20 years at my last job. as a material handler for a paint manufacturer.
How does your day go when come in for work?
Well, I come in here at five in the morning. I grab my bucket and johnny mop and I get busy.
I’m the Tidy Bowl Man of El Camino.
What are some of the perks to this job?
I like being around this neat campus and all the pretty women.
I like the woman I work for and I like riding around in my little buggy.
I like this job, so I’ll stay here until I retire.
Are there any really low points to the job? What are they?
The low points are the things people do to the elevators and to the bathrooms.
We have to go clean up people’s messes. It makes you wonder if they do these things in their own homes.
How are the rest of the the students and the staff on campus when it comes to keeping EC clean?
Everyone seems to be OK. There are just a few out of the bunch who make things hard for us.
There’s a guy who comes in and pisses in the elevators and a woman who comes and steals the toilet paper in the bathrooms.
You won’t believe the things some of these people do.
What do you think the worst misconception about custodians is?
Many people think we’re idiots, but we’re not.
Do you get that kind of judgment from people often?
Yes, here and there. There are some “holier than thou” people around here, I guess.
How do you handle that?
I just don’t give them the time of day.
I’m as good as anybody else here. I don’t do drama.
Is there anything else you’d like to add or feel that students should know?
Yes. Students shoukd just treat this place the way they treat their homes. It’ll make things a lot easier on everyone.
