Campus Viewpoints: Should sex education be taught in school systems?

Roselle Segura, 22, Radiology Technology major

“Yes, I think it’s important for schools to teach sex education because right now the population is growing drastically and safe sex is important. People should be aware.”

Camie Butler, 43, Special Education major

“Yes, they should know the do’s and don’ts. It’s important for kids who can’t learn it at home to get it at school. Kids should learn prevention and how to protect themselves.”

Corey Turpin, 20, Speech Communications major

“No, teaching someone out of the book, and having people put condoms on bananas doesn’t teach them how to correctly protect themselves. I just don’t see it being effective.”

Walter Gomez, 18, Criminal Justice major

“No, it shouldn’t be taught because kids are too young. There’s a place it should be taught at home, not in school. Schools aren’t for sex, but for learning about other things.”

Robert Murillo, 21, Music major

“Yes, definitely. Ideally, it would be taught at home, but the problem is most parents don’t teach their kids sex ed. They should develop a curriculum and teach it at school.”

David Stalcup, 18, Physical Therapy major

“No, because kids are having sex too young. I’m a religious guy, a good Christian, so it’s very bad to teach kids about sex because they might want to experiment at a young age.”
