Censorship is not the answer
Recently, radio disc jockeys Howard Stern and Bubba the Love Sponge lost radio shows. They are both well-known for their aired sexual obscenities and dirty humor.
Most of us are aware of who they are and what has happened to them, as well as the real reason they were fired. We all know that Stern and Sponge were not fired simply for their crude humor.
If they were fired simply for the content alone, they would have been fired a long time ago, or never allowed on air at all.
No matter how many other excuses people come up with, this is really just the backlash from Janet Jackson’s breast being exposed at this year’s Super Bowl halftime show.
I don’t blame people for being shocked by the half-time show. Who would’ve seen that coming? All of a sudden, flop; half of Jackson’s chest is hanging out on live national television. This event may well go down in history, along with other famous society-shockers.
Does anyone remember that infamous, “Gone with the Wind” quote? “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn.” People were once outraged by that quote. It’s no big deal now, is it? We’ve all heard worse language in the movies nowadays.
What was once taboo has become normal and acceptable, but an almost-bare breast on live television, that’s something new. It’s something to get the modern audience hot and bothered, but isn’t that what we look to entertainers for? We want them to wow us and give us something to talk about.
I’m not saying that I’m enthusiastic about the halftime show, or think that it was appropriate. I just don’t think that it’s worthy of all this resentment. I have never really listened to Stern or Sponge, but I have heard of the content of their jokes. I’m not a huge fan of either of the two, but I still don’t think that the way they were fired was right.
I just don’t understand society’s need for censorship. Some say it’s to protect our children. If that was the case, then censoring entertainment isn’t the answer. A parent is responsible for monitoring their child. It is a self-centered and downright lazy request to ask the rest of the world to do a parent’s job. It is also raping us of our freedom of speech and pursuit of happiness to have a lot censorship.
Giving movies, television shows and video games ratings and warning people of the content beforehand is reasonable, but the way Stern and Bubba have been treated is a shameful, pathetic action to take.
I worry that this opens the door for the country to continue censoring, something I would hate to see happen. Who are certain people to tell us what is morally wrong to watch on television? I also think these censor-happy individuals would actually end up hurting themselves if they got things their way.
To whom would we point the finger of blame for violence if there were no violent video games or controversial rap artists? Who would be the bad influence if there was no Jackson or Stern?
Maybe it’s time for us all to face the ugly truth and admit that people only have themselves to blame for their actions. I can’t speak for the rest of the world, but when it comes to seeing Jackson’s boob, frankly, I don’t give a damn.
