How long were you in the Army?
I was active duty for three years. I have been a reservist for one year. I entered the Army straight out of high school.
Why did you choose the Army?
The Army is the biggest branch of the military. It offers more job opportunities and room for advancement to the other branches. Right now, I am a sergeant in the National Guard. It only took me two years to accomplish this.
Did your parents support your decision to join the military? Why?
My mother was totally against it. Like most Hispanic mothers she wanted me to go to school and get an education. My father was very supportive. Also, I am the oldest sibling and the only girl. I have two brothers, 14 and 20.
Who inspired you in the military?
My platoon sergeant. When I was stationed in Korea, things were difficult. He taught me to face my problems instead of running away. He helped me change my thinking and got me through the difficult times. My Sergeant encouraged me to go further in the military. He saw that I was a hard worker.
What was it like when you were deployed and where were you on September 11, 2001?
I was afraid. In April of 2001, I was sent to Korea. It was a very hostile environment. There were times when I really wanted to go home. I was in Korea until June of 2002. When September 11 happened I was in Korea worried about my family. My mother worked at LAX and I was really concerned. The news said terrorists were using planes at the airport to attack the U.S. Certain times in the day I was allowed to call home. I wanted to know if my family was alright.
Would you recommend the Army to students seeking money for school? Why?
Yes. I mean if they really need the money to go to school its great. The G.I. Bill pays 75 percent of my tuition and I get a check every month. This is a good benefit for me.
What are your plans for the future?
I plan to graduate in June and then transfer to USC. I will continue to be a reservist because the 75 percent tuition assistance from the G.I. Bill really helps out.
Would you recommend the Army to you children?
Yes. If my children told me that they were joining the military, I would respect their decision. I don’t think there is anything wrong with joining the military.
How is EC different from the Army?
In the Army, my life was so structured. Now that I am a full-time student I feel like a fish out of water. Everything is so relaxed. I have freedom to do whatever I want. I can now make my own decisions. If I don’t want to go to class, I don’t. I can pick the classes I want and when I want to take them. In the Army I was on a strict schedule.
