Update: Minor changes have been made at 1:39 p.m.

An explosion shook the Torrance Exxon Mobil Refinery area causing a fire around 9 a.m. this morning, but was put out by Torrance Fire Department, Capt. Steve Deuel said.

Torrance Fire Department responded on scene at the ExxonMobil Refinery, which was closed on Del Amo Blvd. between Maple Ave. and Crenshaw Blvd. Traffic was backed up heavily and people were told to avoid the area near the explosion.

According to a Nixle alert sent out at 10:05 a.m. “Fire explosion at Exxon Mobil. Those in affected area should shelter in place.”
