For those who feel like watching a movie on Halloween night, “Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse” is the perfect choice.
The film follows three high-school sophomore boy scouts, Ben (Tye Sheridan), Carter (Logan Miller) and Augie (Joey Morgan), as they face a zombie apocalypse in their small town along with cocktail waitress, Denise (Sarah Dumont).
The setup is fairly original, as there has been many different kinds of groups facing zombies (lazy people in “Shaun of the Dead” and a variety group in “Zombieland”), but yet there has not been a premise as unique as boy scouts versus zombies.
The writing is solid, creating a lot of laughs aimed toward everything from the scouts themselves to the ways the zombies are killed.
The visual gags are also both hilarious and so wrong at the same time. We see some of the most effective zombie visuals and perverse jokes in a long while, including taking hold onto something unfortunate in order to avoid getting eaten.
The film’s style is also incredible for its low $15-million budget, using some amazing camera styles, great direction from Christopher B. Landon and great zombie makeup.
The performances themselves are also strong, with Miller shining in the group with his rebellious nature and offensive behavior, while Sheridan shined as the leader of the group of zombie-hunters.
Overall, “Scouts Guide” is a fun, fast-paced and hilarious adventure that is sure to please weekend audiences this Halloween weekend.
