Devouring the South Bay music scene with ferocity, The Wolf describes itself as “a wolf-meat sandwich.”
The Wolf consists ofJosh Vidal on bass, Cameron Mackenzie on guitar, Charels Herrick, vocals, Brian Tuley on saxophone, Dane De Forest on drums. Vidal, Herrick and De Forest are EC students and Tuley plays bassoon for the L.A. Philharmonic. The Wolf’s debut album “Trench Jelly Picnic” was released last year and the band is in the writing process for its next album.
“We have a punk part and an artsy part,” Herrick said.
“We have a psychedelic part, too,” Mackenzie said.
“Yeah, we’re noisy, too. We love noise,” Vidal added.
The Wolf is not like most bands, especially with the latest addition of their long time friend Tuley on saxophone.
“We weren’t looking for a saxophone player, but we’re open to new things and it just happened,” Vidal said. “I think that it is an interesting addition to our sound and so far our fans seem to agree.”
“What we set out to play is high energy music,” Mackenzie said.
“Yeah, we want to be a band that is fun to see live,” Herrick said.
Most bands strive to put on intense, crowd-pleasing shows, but The Wolf accomplishes this by playing hard and staying tight.
“There’s not enough conviction in bands anymore,” Mackenzie said. “There were just a bunch of generic hardcore bands in the South Bay,” Herrick said. “We wanted to be as exciting to see as a hardcore band, but with more creative music and lyrics.”
The Wolf has gone through many transformations.
“We started out as a five piece, then a four piece and now a six piece,” Herrick said.
Vidal, Mackenzie and Herrick are the original members and have kept the band active since 2006.
“Evolution is natural and as a band you should want to change and evolve. Life changes and your music affects your life, so it’s natural for a band or a musician to change,” Mackenzie said.
The Wolf is playing Friday at 9 p.m. at The Hickory Underworld located at 1166 Magnolia Ave in Long Beach. Tickets cost $2.
“It’s hard to get shows like this because normally it’s a pay to play venue, or in a friends backyard with bad sound system,” Vidal said. “We’re looking forward to this show because were playing with legitimate bands in a legitimate venue.”
