With the recent cold weather, more than 100 children’s young energy will warm the audience’s hearts by their pure and angelic voices in EC.
EC music department presents, a choral concert, South Bay Children’s Choir, “Holidays in Harmony” The children will play their last performance this year, next Sunday, at 4 p.m., at the Marsee Auditorium(tickets for the concert will be $8).
South bay Children’s Choir (SBCC) is a select group of talented young singers sponsored by EC and the leadership of Diane Simon, EC music professor and artistic director of the concert, comprised of more than 140 boys and gives ranging in age frm 7 to 18.
Also, these young singers come from more than 25 communities in the South Bay as well as from communities as far as orange County to the south and Santa Monica to the North, and they were chosen by and audition.
These singers assemble to sing songs under Simon’s teaching at EC every Monday afternoon, Tuesday and Thursday morning and they started learning and training for the concert at the beginning of this semester. Also, they are not only learning choir, but also earning college credit for their students in ensemble singing, voice production, music theory, sight-reading ,choreography, and a varied chorale repertoire.
“The young ensemble is really wonderful and Ms. Simon has done a good job. I think they are the best children’s choir around,”Dane Teter, music professor, said.
Therefore, the width of SBCC’s music activity doesn’t know when to stop. After SBCC presented, “Award for Excellence in Music,” by the Torrance Cultural Arts Council 2001, its activity doesn’t only stay around the South Bay area, but also goes to the Nation.
SBCC performed in Alaska in the Northern Lights Festival in summer of last year, and also traveled to Hawaii to perform in the Pasiffic Rim Festival.
Also, the SBCC performs two annual concerts at St.Francis Fpiscopul Church in Palos Verdes in spring, at EC in winter every year.
“We want the audience to leave the concert feeling good about the world, and looking forward to the celebratory month of December,” Simon said.
Also, the young singers will perform a total of 21 songs including “Oh, Had I Jubal’s Lyre” by George F. Handel, and “Alleluia” by WolfgangAmadeus Mozart. Also, “A Caroling Fantasy,” “Resonet in Laudibus,” were composed for SBCC by B.Wayne Bisbee, composer-in-residence. Bisbee has written more than 20 pieces for EC and they’ve been published.
These pieces are for several different choirs, singing together in various combinations.
“The young singers’ experiences are very impressionable. So, I hope they continue training and performing, and connetting to adult music in the future,”Joanna Nachef ,chorale professor, said.
With the young singers’ choir harmony, Christmas season will be coming.
“We want to show the audience that children have unique voices that can create sounds that open the heart. Also, we are preparing for the celebration of Christmas songs. So, we want the audience to enjoy this time,” Simon said.
