With the bases loaded, he slightly bends his body forward and gets into position waiting for the ball to be pitched.
Glancing onto the field, he swings his bat sending the ball flying over the field and past the fence. One by one the players slide to home base and look up to see the crowd…denied.
Sports teams and many players at EC have been making huge accomplishments this semester, however, the participation and support from students at EC have been anything but supportive.
It’s understandable that a lot of students have commitments, like a job, internships, or children that make it impossible to attend any extracurricular activities.
However, there are also those students who seem to just not care, or see community college as something they need to finish in order to attend a “real” college.
Yes, EC is a community college.
Just because it is a community college and not some elite university doesn’t mean that it shouldn’t have the respect it deserves and dedication given by its students.
But there are great things happening on campus that make it stand out. EC is a community college, but it doesn’t mean that students shouldn’t have pride in their college or any college spirit. Participating in campus activities and events will help give a student the college experience.
There have been many athletes that have had great achievements in sports, giving EC much recognition.
Cross-country athlete David Cardona has been breaking numerous records this semester, recently giving what is said as “one of the next best performance on the state’s leaders list” by collegetrack.com, with one of the fastest times in the 5K relays in Mt. Sac event in many years.
However, sports aren’t the only thing worth mentioning when it comes to accomplishments at EC.
The debate team defended its national title in debate at a conference held at Phi Rho Pi Community College National Tournament taking the title with about 86 points. The journalism department at EC attended the Journalism Association of Community Colleges in April of this year, winning 20 awards by the students in the program as well as the pacesetter and general excellence awards.
While it’s true that most students are at EC to successfully transfer into a university, the possibilities and opportunities here are endless.
Workshops to further extend a students resume are available throughout the semester on campus. Students can also take internships to build their portfolio while attending classes, making their time on campus even more enriching.
Whether you’re here taking a few classes for pure interest or working on your requirements to transfer, one doesn’t need to be part of a team in order to have team spirit and to have pride in the campus they attend.
