A student government event that offers evening study sessions, tutoring support, recreational activities, and free food is facing a potential setback to its late-night hours due to a shortage of Associated Student Organization (ASO) volunteers.
The event, Finals Madness, invites students to study for their upcoming finals during late hours in the tutoring services section of the Schauerman Library while free food and recreational activities are provided downstairs in the Distance Education Center.
To ensure the event runs smoothly, volunteers apart of student government (ASO) are needed.
ASO representatives were made aware that the evening event would take place the week of Monday, June 1, to Thursday, June 4 from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Event participation is considered during the end-of-semester evaluation for student-elected officials.
Austin Toney, Student Activities Advisor, said stipends were at risk because of the lack of volunteers.
“Each ASO member or student leader is evaluated based off each semester for a stipend of up to a certain amount of money for each position…the possibility of it being cut completely or cut with a percentage is based off of their performance,” Toney said.
On the first day of Final Madness, 13 ASO officers volunteered to help run the event.
As the event continued through the week, there were fewer sign-ups, with only 11 on Tuesday, 10 on Wednesday, and nine for Thursday.
Finals Madness operational hours are still set to continue normally until the event ends on June 4.
