Four games into the season, coach Nate Fernley was looking at a young, winless team.
Now, 10 games into the season, the team is on a six game winning streak.
“We were young,” Fernley said. “We graduated seven players from last year’s final four team. We knew we were going to have a couple guys who did not know what college baseball is all about.”
The Warriors swept the season series against L.A. Mission College winning 5-4 last Thursday in extra innings and 8-4 last Friday.
Their next game will be at home against Santa Barbara College today at 2 p.m.
“We’re starting to do really well together,” Jeff Dorman, outfielder, said. “We’re starting to string hits together. That’s the main thing, just being consistent.”
Chris Vopinek, the starting pitcher during the team’s 5-4 victory, was shaky in the beginning of the game, giving up two runs, but eventually settled in by pitching seven scoreless innings and striking out seven.
“It felt good on the mound,” Vopinek said. “I struggled early but did fine after. My fastball was my best pitch and I did well by mixing it with my two seam.”
Continuing their strong play, the Warriors’ starting pitcher Josh Mingura, led the team to victory last Friday by pitching a complete game.
“We jumped out on them early then the rain came,” Fernley said. “We got seven innings in and then we got to the eighth inning when it really started raining. We fought through the rain and we were prepared.”
Having a very young team, a year after having a very good championship run, Vopinek said the second-year players are trying to get the new players on board for another deep run this year.
“We had a lot of new guys coming in and there was a big learning curve for us,” Vopinek said. “We’ve won six straight now and beat some good teams but there’s always room for improval with all these young guys who’s still trying to get used to playing at this level.”
Struggling to find their identity early on, the Warriors finally seemed to figure things out.
“We’re improving. We’re just trying to figure out what we have. Having a slow start, we chose to compete and I like what we have.” Fernley said
