Time for change in the Bond Universe

This past week, the current author of the James Bond book series, Anthony Horowitz, made a very controversial comment on whether actor Idris Elba should take up the mantle of being the new 007.

Horowitz called Elba “too street” and “rough” to play the British super spy. His comments set the Twitter world on fire as many fans were outraged to hear these remarks, resulting in backlash claiming Horowitz as a racist.

When Horowitz called him “rough” I laughed and scoffed because the roughest Bond that has ever hit the big screen was Daniel Craig. No Bond ever has had the most intense chase scenes like Craig bouncing off cars and buildings trying to chase down his target. Craig was the Bond that was rough around the edges.

Horowitz later then apologized “I’m really sorry my comment about Idris Elba have caused offense. That wasn’t my intention.” Horowitz continued on to say he can think of better black actors to play the part.

As a kid I was engulfed in the Bond world and I loved it. My grandpa would play the soundtracks of the original movies like Goldfinger, From Russia with Love, and other various films from the Bond franchise during the Sean Connery era of 007.

It was old school but I enjoyed it. From the beautiful women to the classic cars and gadgets, I was blown away as a child. The sophistication of Bond is what really shocked and awed me as he would save the world and have the pretty girl on his arm.

I mean, what kid didn’t want to be Bond at one point in their childhood?

I have seen every Bond movie that has been made at least two times each and I can say with full confidence that Idris Elba would play a phenomenal Bond. Elba has the suave to play Bond and has proved it in his show “Luther” as the detective that would always get the job done.

So I completely dismiss Horowitz’s claims to Elba being rough. Also when he said Adrian Lester should be the black Bond was another claim on his credibility on his choice of Bond was irrelevant.

Elba has the look and suave down to a pack and I can safely say he has the Bond look down more then Lester will ever have. Also I tip my hat to Elba as he responded to Horowitz’s comments with an Instagram pic with a caption saying “Always Keep Smiling!! It takes no energy and never hurts! Learned from the Street!”

I don’t know if you can have better composure then that. Elba is a class act. I would love to see him driving the iconic Aston Martin car around for MI6.

The Bond franchise is currently in the midst of groundbreaking change. In the past 20 years we’ve had a female M, a young Q, and a black Moneypenny. I think it is time for a new Bond.
