A college community should be a place where all students, staff and faculty members can come together for personal and professional growth in a safe environment.
But, that is not always the case. Unfortunately, there are those individuals who are ruthless and just want to hurt others. But on the other hand, there are those other individuals who take the initiative to protect and serve to make the college campus a safe and enjoyable place to be in.
That is exactly what the Campus Watch Program on our campus is aiming to do. Campus watch, which was organized by the Police Chief Michael Trevis, is a way for everyone to be involved in keeping our campus safe. People who participate in the program collaborate with the police department to keep a close eye on what is happening in and around our campus.
Students and other staff members are welcome to attend campus watch meetings where discussions center on what happens on the campus grounds and how to prevent any problematic circumstances.
This program is ideal for students and faculty who attend EC in the evenings, especially since crimes tend to occur more at night.
For many students, night classes are not an option, but a necessity and with EC being such a large campus, students and faculty should feel safe when walking around campus at night.
Safety is a priority on campus and attacks on students have been a reality in the past.
Even though the Police Department is committed to serving our college community and does a good job, there is always need for more help. Any contribution from students could make a lasting impact on campus.
Meetings take place on the first, second and third Tuesday of every month and all students should make an effort to make themselves present because it is everyone’s responsibility to keep our college safe.
With some extra assistance from individuals like the student body, EC can be a better, safer and more comfortable environment.
For many of us, EC is our home away from home, and there is no better feeling than knowing that we can help each other keep safe.
