Munchy, an on campus restaurant, has been sporting a B rating from the L.A. County Department of Public Health food service ratings for almost as long as it has been open.
Not only is the rating a B, but also Munchy’s is overall score is 81 points due to 11 violations including one for keeping food under heat lamps for too long.
Another health code violation was that Munchy is “not clean.”
An example of the “not clean” violation can include accumulation of dirt, grease, mold and other food debris as well as cockroaches and rodent droppings.
Other violations include Munchy having cooking items that need repair or have rust on them and general disrepair among the storage and cooking areas.
The current score of 81 is only two points away from being rated a C.
According to the L.A. County Department of Public Health, the average restaurant rating in L.A. County in 2007 was 93.3, 12 points above Munchy.
An establishment on campus that serves hundreds, if not thousands of students a day can not put its’ customer’s health in jeopardy be having sub-standard practices.
This rating has stood since April 21, 2009, which is almost an entire year.
The menu offered at Munchy includes a variety of fast food items such as hamburgers, french fries and other artery clogging fatty foods, which compounded with the unclean environment is harmful to students.
Despite the unhealthy choices available to students, Munchy still has an obligation to provide food that is prepared and cooked in sanitary conditions. The food should not make you sick.
With the health standards not being up to par, students should not support Munchy by giving the restaurant their hard earned money.
Until Munchy proves to the student body that it has completely cleaned up its act, students should boycott Munchy and choose to eat at one of the other food eateries available both on and off of campus.
Munchy needs to change. The restaurant needs to show both the student body and the faculty that its facilities are clean.
In addition, Munchy needs to serve food that is both sanitary and healthier than its current options.
Without these essential changes, Munchy will continue to be the looked down upon service on campus and a shameful part of EC.
The only way for Munchy to prove itself is by correcting its mistakes and receiving an A grade.
