Editorial:EC should embrace new global learning classes

Technology has presented the world with some fun tools: iPods, iPhones and game consoles.

In the age of the World Wide Web, people are given our greatest invention, the information super highway, which spans farther than the 405 freeway or the 10 freeway.

It has allowed people to find the latest on just about anything, from politics to learning how to do the Windsor double knot on your tie.

EC is expanding its technological ventures through its Global Education Through Technology (GETT) project where students in class at EC can communicate via widescreen and satellite with students from other countries.

The colleges involved with EC include Dnipropetrovsk National University in Ukraine, University of Modena at Reggio Emilia in Italy and Lebanese University in Beirut.

The class, while in its first semester, utilizes real time videos as well as lectures and e-mail to correspond with its global contemporaries.

If the program were to be expanded, just picture the options students could have: learning about Renaissance Art from an Italian university, embracing film and theater classes from the perspective of Asian and European cultures.

The possibilities seem endless, and EC is only dabbling in the first stages of the program.

It should look at the larger picture and take the necessary steps to ensure further immersion into the GETT program.

EC should embrace this project as it would benefit not only EC students, but also put EC at the forefront of the future of education.

As it has been seen, the future is digital and technological, print seems to be dying and the reading medium has become more electronic.

The next step in education should not only be limited to the classroom but the global spectrum.

By utilizing the GETT program, students can be more critical of the world around them and their views by providing a spectrum that is not only American but international.

Students can become more open to accepting new ideas and challenge their previous convictions.

Plus, what is more appealing is the different perspective students will receive.

In this day and age, it is time that students begin thinking out of the box, especially American students.

The GETT project represents a new era in education and a broader future for the next generation of EC students.

The resources are there and the time to accept it is now.

This is not just a flash in the pan, but the direction education is heading and we better open up more to this program before we become the last ones to do so.
