What was your major in high school? Why did you choose to become a geology instructor?
My major was geology in college. I love learning about earthquakes and volcanoes. I also love to hike and go camping. My hobby is cave exploring.

Why did you choose to teach at EC?
They were hiring oceanographers so I applied and got hired.

What else do you teach?
I teach oceanography with a lab, geology and physical geography.

What is geology?
It’s the study of the Earth. It deals with the dynamics of planet earth and why some places have earthquakes and others don’t.

Do you think more teachers should become geology professors?
Absolutely. We like to encourage others to have new ideas.

What are the requirements for a geology instructor?
You get your Bachelor of Science and then get your Masters of Science.

How long are geology classes?
The lecture and lab are three hours each.

What were you like in college?
I was outgoing and I was also a people person. You have to be passionate about the subject matter. I took my classes seriously.

How can students be better prepared for earthquakes?
Students should have basic supplies in their homes. Items that should be purchased include but not limited to water, canned goods, food items, toiletries, plastic trash bags, storage container with lid, first aid kits, manual can opener, and flashlights with batteries.

Where can these items be purchased?
You should customize for your own family needs. There are also numerous websites to go to. You can just about Google anything. Think about what you want in your own kit and go from there.

Any last comments?
Knowledge of earth processes can be beneficial to everyone because it can save our lives.
