Editorial: Students should be wary of false ratings

The number of students who use rating websites such as ratemyprofessor.com before deciding on a class is increasing.

What some students do not understand is that the website is not very reliable.

Anyone can write a review, whether he or she has taken the class or not. There is no limit to how many reviews one can write and there is no way of knowing that the review is based on facts rather than just anger for getting a lesser grade.

Also, deciding not to take a class just because several students commented that it has “too many essays” are ridiculous.

Learning is not supposed to be easy-how can one learn without challenges?

They should make the decision to take a class after reading what kind of class it is-if many comments said that they learned a lot or the professor respects students’ opinions, then it can be said that class is worth the time and money.

Though it may be tempting to drop a class because the professor was rated the highest on difficulty, one can never predict how much one can learn by what a website says.
