Red tape refers to conformity but with many styles to be displayed at this year’s fashion show ranging from punk to classy, June 5 will show students are not covered in red tape.
“Red Tape is paperwork, the nitty gritty things that get in your way. We wanted to name our show Red Tape because we are anti-red tape. We’re about making things sexy,” Michelle Rahim, president of Tailor Made fashion club, said.
Rahim said at this year’s fashion show students can expect a wide variety and diverse group of designers creating everything from glitz and glamour to colorful and crazy, the latter being a signature of her clothing collection, called Clown Couture. “My friends and I love to dress up and be silly like if we wear a cocktail dress, we love to add a twist to it, so that’s how I came up with Clown Couture,” Rahim said.
Tailor Made and Fashion 42, the fashion class, are working together to put this show on by making fliers, promoting the show and deciding for the lighting of the show. They will handle the backstage of the show, which will have 15 models and a lot of dressers, Rahim said it won’t be chaotic, because they have a good team.
“People don’t realize how much goes into putting a fashion show together,” Rahim said.
As for the show, Rahim said that students can expect a great show that will have a new runway setup that is different than previous years. There will also be a live DJ and great designers who have worked very hard.
“We will have a new runway setup, beautiful models, great designers and a good time,” Rahim said. the show will be inspiring and memorable.”
Another designer showcasing her designs is Alison Eriquel, 21, fashion design major, whose line was ‘Purple Rain,” inspired before becoming a clothing line based on Prince collaborator Apollonia. This is a look that is about a lot of leg, form fitting, lots of mesh, and studs, Eriquel said.
“My collection is edgy and futuristic, but at the same time very relevant, it’s a touch trashy as well,” Eriquel said.
Federico Rangel, 23, art major, with a emphasis on apparel design, has made what Rahim described as a “punk princess” type line, complete with pencil skirts and short dresses that a female could throw on with Converse.
“(The punk princess line) is Sandy from Grease meets Tim Armstrong of Rancid and they have a love child, so it should be really cool to see,” Rahim said.
Rangel said his line is what he would want a girl to wear on a date while retaining the Southern California punk look.
Another clothing line to be featured is Walter by Walter Mendez, 19, fashion design major. This is a high-end women’s line of clothing for the young woman who has the mind of a teenager, but the body of an adult.
“My collection is the Hollywood it-girl; it’s the girl being followed by the paparazzi and she is effortlessly chic and sexy,” Mendez said.
“Red Tape” is all about being fun and sexy and from the looks of these designers people can expect to get all that and much more at the show, Mendez said.
This is a showcase of EC talent Mendez said. and it should unite the students on campus.
The “Red Tape” fashion show will be in the Marsee Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. and as Mendez said we can expect a lot from the EC fashion students.
“You can expect a diverse group of genres in terms of designs, we’re going to see everything,” Mendez said.
