The founding fathers believed that every citizen has the right to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects against unreasonable searches and seizures according to the Fourth Amendment in the Bill of Rights.
It is up to police and law makers to determine what is reasonable, and with the crime rate in Arizona on the rise from drug cartels smuggling goods over the border and illegal immigration out of control, having the right to ask for valid papers with the new immigration law is completely necessary and reasonable.
Gov. Jan Brewer, R-Ariz, signed the new immigration bill which allows police to question anyone who is suspected of being an illegal immigrant.
It makes being an illegal immigrant a state crime and will allow for deportation of those who are here illegally. Finally, Arizona has a way to curb the amount of people living here illegally.
The federal government obviously hasn’t found a way to solve the problem of illegal immigration, so the state had to take it into their own hands.
Murders, kidnappings and home thefts have been a huge problem in Arizona and the majority are at the hands of drug cartels and residents live in fear because of it.
A 25 percent drop in crime coincided with a drop in the number of illegal immigrants in the first five months on 2009, according the the Phoenix Business Journal, showing a correlation between illegal immigrants and crime.
Not only is crime an issue, but how about those trying to sell properties and live peacefully in areas where illegal immigrants gather in large groups to be picked up for day labor? It makes the area less desirable with groups of people hanging around on street corners.
There’s also the idea of overpopulation. If the U.S. just let anyone and everyone into the country, our resources would diminish before they could be replenished.
Not only that, with the economy in the state it’s in, we can barely help ourselves, never mind the rest of the world, that wants to prosper from the fruit of our labors.
The police have the right to search anyone for any reason at any time. Since when are people upset about a police officer asking for some form of ID? If you’re here illegally, you’re here illegally and that’s that. Unless someone can come up with a better plan for curbing illegal immigration, this is what needs to be done.
