What we get when video game vendors come out in front of an army of children to present the newest, most brutally violent “must have game on the market” is simply nothing but trouble. This is because the media has no idea how much their advertisings have influenced consumers into something a lot more than just a product.
The media has been very influential on violence that has not only been depicted through video games, but TV programs, films and music lyrics as well. The media has such an impact on the way we think, act and feel. We have trusted the media as an authority to feed us with legitimate news, education and most of all, entertainment. It is responsible for much of the violence in human behavior that we see today.
Television in the home has the greatest source of impact with visual violence for adults, but especially in children. Children pick up on everything they see incredibly quickly.
The average child watches about 8,000 televised murders and 100,000 acts of violence by the time they reach adulthood.
The media is our source to what is going on around the world and to bring entertainment.
Without the media, we would just know what is going on in the neighborhood we live in.
Today, guns, drugs and sex are shown in almost all TV shows, movies, music videos and video games. It seems to me that if a consumer is not presented with some sort of violence or sex in the advertisement, then he or she would not be interested.
If one were to ask a room full of people whether they have seen or known someone who has been violently killed, almost every one there will unfortunately raise their hand because violence has increased.
Excessive exposure to media violence can affect people in many ways as they can develop traumatic fears of being victimized in real life.
On the news recently, a 20-year-old aspiring music artist was shot and killed in Inglewood on his way to his car. He was an innocent man who didn’t contribute to gangs, but was targeted anyway.
Research shows that a child who watches excessive TV becomes a more aggressive child and grows up to be even more aggressive as an adult. As adults they can resist, but their habits have been affected by what they viewed when they were children.
With the advancements in technology in the last 50 years, the media has been able to grow drastically, influencing many to unfortunate behavior. One must, and should, be able to differentiate between what is real and what is fictional.
