Member of the Referees Association says catch should have been called touchdown

After what appeared to be a botched call, EC’s football team attempted to have a controversial call overturned after its 33-30 loss against Ventura College Sept. 18.

In the fourth quarter of the game, Warriors quarterback Joey Notch made a pass to wide receiver Nicholas Roos for what many believed was a completed pass.

But a referee ruled the pass incomplete.

“He did not complete the pass in the field of play,” the referee said.

After reviewing the play a member of the Referees’ Association believes the catch should have been a touchdown.

“The head of the Referees’ Association and he’s one of our commissioners when he watched it (the play) he said there was ‘no doubt in his mind it was a touchdown,'”coach John Featherstone said. “Our crew just missed it. And that’s all we can do, we can’t get the game back, can’t get the play back.”

While the game is over and can’t be overturned, the team hopes that later in the season if the team has playoffs in sight, playoff committees may go back to that play if two teams are close.

“But, if we keep winning down the road, we got a chance for a bowl game, or chance for the playoffs, they’ll remember that play,” Featherstone said. “That’ll be a part of at least a discussion if there’s two teams about the same or close, they may say ‘hey El Camino should have won that game.’ We’ll just have to see what happens.”
