Campus Viewpoints: Digital Privacy

KimberlySanchez.jpg

Kimberly Sanchez, 20, biology major: “We deserve our privacy and it’s in the constitution. The government’s already involved enough in our lives and it makes it even worse if they are involved with our phones as well. We need to have our own privacy rights.”

Rodas.jpg

Josephine Rodas, 19: “I say no (to the government getting personal information) because it goes against our (first amendment), the freedom of speech.”

Chikai Tsai, 21, psychology major: “Everyone’s cell phone is their own privacy so I don’t think the government has the right to get your information and account stuff.”

Marcel Bell, 20, film major: “I don’t think it’s ok because we already have a law where they have to get warrants in order to obtain information. If they do pass a law where the government can go to companies to get information, then that’s like a loophole and it makes it easier for hackers.”

Delia Dominguez, 32, graphic design major: I feel like (the gov’t) goes through the phones anyway, whether they tell us or not. This is something they are trying to cover their behinds on. That way when they do go through it it’s just they have something on record that they were able to go through it. But I think they go through it no matter what.
