An El Camino College student who was arrested on campus Monday, Oct. 6, on suspicion of fondling women was released without having to post bail, pending a court hearing.
George Jay Runnels, 21, is currently facing misdemeanor charges after he fondled women on and off campus Thursday, Oct. 2.
Director of Student Development Ricky Gonzalez could not comment on Runnels’ arrest, but he added that when students are arrested for a crime, there is a multi-layered process that has to be followed.
When a student is arrested for a crime committed on campus, they are expected to appear in court.
Gonzalez said if the student is found not guilty or charges are dropped, that is when things become more complicated.
The school has a responsibility to ask for proof that there are no on-going legal issues. In addition, the courts need to prove that the student is guilty or innocent of the charges.
“So there’s no, like, definitive answer. It’s more like, we’re not just going to take the word of it,” he said.
There is currently no hearing date set for Runnels.
ECC police believe there may be more victims.
