Police Beat, Week of Feb. 2 and Feb. 9

Saturday, Feb. 1, 10 a.m.–Officers responded to the library for a broken water pipe on the first floor, which caused large amounts of water to leak into the basement. Officers evacuated the building, notified the EC staff, and shut down the building’s water. No equipment was damaged

Tuesday, Feb. 4, 7:15 p.m.–Officers responded to lot L regarding a hit and run report. A male student stated he parked at 7:10 p.m., and discovered three dents to the front-left fender of his vehicle when he returned. There were no witnesses.

Wednesday Feb. 5, 12 a.m.–Officers conducted a traffic stop on a speeding vehicle at the intersection of Manhattan Beach and Crenshaw Boulevards. The driver, a male non-student, was found to have a small amount of marijuana in his possession. The driver was issued a citation for speeding and possession of marijuana, and released into the field.

Wednesday Feb. 5, approximately 10 a.m.–Officers responded to the station regarding a vehicle burglary report. The owner, a female student, reported that her car, parked on the second floor of Lot H, was broken into and its parking permit stolen. There were no signs of forced entry into the vehicle.

Thursday Feb. 6, approximately 3 p.m.–Officers responded to the station regarding a theft report. A male student stated that he was in the pool area to attend a P.E. class, and placed his book bag on the bleachers at around 11:20 a.m.. When he returned at 12:20 p.m., he noticed that his cellphone had been removed from his bag.

Thursday Feb. 6, 4 p.m.–Officers responded to the station regarding a theft report. A male student stated that at 10:15 a.m. he had locked his bicycle to a post on the north side of the planetarium using a standard cable lock. When he returned at 3:45 p.m., he discovered his bike was missing.

Monday Feb. 10, 11:50 a.m.–Officers responded to the shops building regarding a disturbance call. A male and female students, siblings, were in class in the communications building when another male student attempted to take the female student’s phone, claiming it was his. An argument between the two parties ensued, until officers arrived on the scene. The siblings were discovered to have warrants for traffic violations. Both siblings were issued citations for their warrants, while the male student who attempted to take the phone was referred to the Director of Student Development for possible academic disciplinary action.

Tuesday Feb. 11, between 12 and 12:30 p.m.–Four Hondas of an early 90s make were broken into in Lot L. The police believe the suspect may have used a shaved key to gain entry to the vehicles, and stole the batteries from all four cars, along with miscellaneous items from their interiors. In the same time frame, a Honda Accord was stolen from the same lot. Detectives are actively investigating the burglaries.

Tuesday Feb. 11, 2:10 p.m.–Officers responded to the Library lawn regarding a medical aid call. A female student had just donated blood on campus and was feeling weak and dizzy. Paramedics arrived on the scene, but the student refused to be transported for treatment.

Wednesday Feb. 12, 3:40 p.m.–Officers responded to the station regarding a theft report. A female student stated that she placed her architecture kit on the floor in front of the circulation desk at the library, and left it unattended for a few moments. When she returned, she discovered that it was missing.

Thursday, Feb. 13, 12:20 a.m.–An officer observed a male subject walking northbound past Marsee auditorium toward the inner campus. The officer contacted the subject, who was a non-student, and discovered the male had a $75,000 felony warrant for domestic violence, issued by the L.A. County Sheriffs. The sheriff’s office declined to pick the man up, so officers issued the man a citation and released him.

Thursday Feb. 13, 7:15 p.m.–Officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for an equipment violation on Redondo Beach Boulevard. The driver, a male non-student, was found to be in possession of an unknown, possibly illegal and controlled substance. Officers confiscated the substance to be sent for testing, and issued the driver a citation for the equipment violation. If the substance tests positive as a controlled substance, the driver will be charged with possession of a controlled substance as well.

Sunday, Feb. 16, 5:40 p.m.–Officers conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle on Crenshaw Boulevard. The driver of the vehicle, a male non-student had a warrant for driving without a license issued out of Culver City. The driver was issued a citation and released.
