The beach located off Highland Avenue and 45th Street is one of the places to go surf in the South Bay this summer.

El Porto is located in north Manhattan Beach between El Segundo and Hermosa Beach. The beautiful scenic drive down Highland Avenue is nothing but million dollar homes and a full landscape of the beach.

Other than the nasty oil refinery in front of El Porto, the sand is white with a long bike path through it and killer waves pounding to shore.

El Porto aka “surfer’s paradise” is one of the top beaches to surf in Los Angeles due to its wave consistency of the crashing blue waves.

The consistency of the waves go from two to up to ten feet, and the line-up can get really crowded when every surfer wants to shred those gnarly waves. The swells are open to every direction so there’s always a wave to surf. Also, the sand bars build up in some places of El Porto creating better waves, all depending on the swell.

Surf camps are offered at El Porto to all ages but, to note for beginners, learning proper surfing etiquette is a must.

Even though El Porto isn’t big like Costa Rica or Hawaii waves where tourists and locals crowd around watch, the infamous surf spot has competitions like Volcom’s VQS Seaslug Surf Series. Last summer, professional surfers came to compete in their division along with others including juniors, groms, and girls.

Pro surfers like Chris Ward, Vini Fornori, Dane Zaun, Hunter Lysaught and many more competed in last summer’s competition. El Porto is a local spot for old timers and regulars to surf, you never know if you’ll run into Dane Zaun at first morning light.
